Sandwich materials selection and optimization
EconCore offers engineering services to optimize and to select core-skin material combinations providing the optimal compromise between material cost, production cost and weight saving to allow a maximal cost saving.
Sandwich selection charts have been developed and implemented in a software tool to enable an optimization of performance per cost. In the sandwich selection charts the properties of sandwich panels from different core-skin material combinations are shown for all skin thickness/panel height ratios (t/h). The core shear deformations, the value of weight saving for the target application as well as the production costs for the core and sandwich panel are included.
In the example on the right picture the optimization for a sandwich material combination under a very common three point bending load case is shown. The table shows that weight savings and material cost savings with a factor of 5.66 are possible. The graphical representation of the material properties, reached by this sandwich material combination are shown in the sandwich materials selection charts. The effects of the core shear deformation and the value of weight saving are included in the bending performance per cost optimization chart. Furthermore, the production costs are included, which can lead to a very different optimal skin thickness/panel height ratio (t/h).
